My name is Luke. I’m an Cyber Security Practitioner in the field of a Incident Response. Below will be a bit of my background in the ever changing Information Technology Driven World.
Education
I started having interest in Information Technology at the age of 14 due to the influence of my family where most of them are in the IT Sector. I started with learning multimedia and office automation tools such as dreamweaver, Flash, Fireworks, Microsoft Words, Excel and Powerpoint.
When I entered the Polytechnic, due to my poor Ordinary-Level results, I do not have a choice but to go with the very few options I am given. I took up my studies in Diploma of Information Technology Specializing in IT Security in 2005, Initially I thought that IT Security would be a boring course as during that time IT Security wasn’t even very popular yet. However the facilitators in Republic Polytechnic had made everything fun and learning interesting which makes me start to love IT Security.
I further studied BSc Computer Science (Digital System Security) at University of Wollongong during my course of work as a Part-Time student to gain further knowledge on cryptography, networking security and etc. I graduated from UOW in year 2014.
Subsequently, I upgraded my skills by taking up certifications from EC-Council. The following Certifications are what I have obtained so far:
– Certified Ethical Hacker
– Certified Network Defender
– Certified Hacking Forensic Investigator
– Certified Security Analyst
Work Experience
I officially started working in an IT company when I was in Polytechnic. My very first company was World Partners Solution Pte. Ltd which was a small medium enterprise (SME). The company I joined did network solutions and I work with them as a part-time Associate Network Engineer. In the course of working there, I am taught on how do network migration, troubleshooting and acquiring network logs.
After my polytechnic education while waiting for my National Service, I join ACP Computer Training School as an Associate Trainer educating Primary and Secondary School Students on Multimedia Software and Office Automation Tools including Open-Source tools.
During my National Service, I decided to sign on as a regular in the Signals Formation to work in a field related to IT and serve my NS at the same time. In my unit, I deal with Servers, Networks and Desktop Support Services. This helps me in improving my critical thinking as often I need to troubleshoot new issues which I had not seen before.
I left the force after 5 years of service and moved to ST Engineering Info-Security as a Software Engineer. My time as a Software Engineer was short as I wanted to learn the how to code securely. I stayed only 2 years in ST before moving to where I am now at Govtech as an Incident Response Team Leader.
I really enjoy my time in Govtech and this marks my 4th year in service this year in 2019. I am given a lot of opportunities to learn from my other colleagues, attend courses and take part in initiatives.
Do look forward to my posting as I share my experience as an Incident Response Team Leader.
